Declutter Your Home to Clear Emotional Blocks and Transform Your Life

Writer's picture: Bridget FlynnBridget Flynn

Have you ever walked into a room in your home and felt an overwhelming sense of suffocation, pressure, or even dread? That feeling might not just be about the physical clutter—it could also be a mirror of what’s happening inside you.

On the podcast Asked and Answered by Soul with host Jennifer Urezzio, I had the opportunity to explore this concept in episode #217, "How Does Your Environment Reflect Your Inner World?" This thought-provoking discussion sheds light on how our external environment—our homes—often reflects our inner world and emotional state. If your space feels overstuffed, it might be time to declutter both your surroundings and your mind.

The Link Between Clutter and Inner Blocks

Clutter is more than just a collection of items; it represents blockages. When your home is filled with too much “stuff,” there’s no room for energy to flow freely. This stagnation can affect not just your physical space but also your ability to welcome new opportunities, love, and growth into your life.

As I shared in the podcast, when you feel like the pressure inside your body is too much—like you’re drowning or on the verge of exploding—it’s often tied to the overwhelm in your environment. Energy is always moving, but when your home is overstuffed, it creates blockages that stop that flow. Similarly, your inner world becomes "clogged," preventing you from moving forward emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

Practical Steps to Start Letting Go

Letting go can feel daunting, especially when you don’t know where to begin. That’s why I recommend starting small and focusing on the physical clutter first. Here are two simple yet impactful steps to get started:

  1. Take a Garbage Bag and Clear the Trash

Begin with a single room. Start at the door and walk around the perimeter in a circular motion, collecting anything that is purely trash—old receipts, junk mail, empty packaging, or anything broken. Removing these items immediately creates breathing room and gives you a sense of accomplishment.

  2. Declutter a Drawer

Choose one drawer in your home—whether in the kitchen, your office, or even a bedside table. Empty it completely and remove items that are too old, broken, or no longer serve you. Then, put back only what is functional and meaningful. This focused approach reduces overwhelm and allows you to feel more in control.

These small, actionable steps can help you create space not only in your home but also in your heart and mind. As you release the physical clutter, you may notice a renewed sense of clarity and calm within yourself.
